A retrospective analysis of the effects of moderate sedation on the degree of cardia exposure in overweight elderly patients.
Summary: When older, overweight adults get a stomach check-up (called an endoscopy), doctors give them medicine to help them relax. This study looked at whether it is better to give a medium amount of medicine (moderate sedation) or a large amount to put them in a deep sleep (deep sedation). The doctors checked 120 patients. They found that the medium amount of medicine was actually better! It helped the doctors see the top part of the stomach much more clearly. Also, the patients woke up faster, breathed better, and were just as happy with the check-up. So, a medium sleep is safer and works better than a deep sleep for these patients.
