A systematic review of free tissue transfer in the management of non-traumatic lower extremity wounds in patients with diabetes.

Summary: For patients with diabetes, chronic foot wounds are a dangerous complication that often leads to amputation when standard treatments fail. However, a complex surgical procedure called "free tissue transfer"—where healthy tissue is moved from another part of the body to cover the wound—shows excellent results. A review of over 500 patients revealed that this surgery, often combined with procedures to improve blood flow, achieved a 92% tissue survival rate. Most importantly, it saved the limbs of 83% of patients who might otherwise have faced amputation. While serious risks exist, this approach offers a vital lifeline for difficult-to-heal wounds.
