AASM Recommends Combination Therapy for Adult Chronic Insomnia
Summary: If you suffer from chronic insomnia, just taking a sleeping pill might not be your best option. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recently shared new guidelines for adults who can't sleep. They recommend combining sleep medication with a special type of counseling called cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I).
However, experts say that doing CBT-I all by itself is actually the best first step to help you sleep better. The goal is to help you get more rest using a plan that fits your specific needs, rather than just relying on medication alone.
