Adjuvant treatment of gastrointestinal stromal tumor: State of the art in 2025.

Summary: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are a type of cancer found in the digestive tract. For most people, surgery alone can cure it. However, if the cancer has a high chance of coming back, doctors prescribe a daily pill called imatinib after surgery.

Recently, doctors looked at four major studies to figure out exactly how long patients should take this pill. They compared treatments lasting anywhere from zero to six years. All the studies agreed on one thing: taking imatinib helps keep the cancer away for a longer time. But only one study showed that taking it longer (3 years instead of 1 year) actually helped people live longer overall. Because the studies were all a bit different, doctors still aren't exactly sure who needs the drug the most, or exactly how many years they should take it.
