Advocacy Win! Governor Newsom Signs AAFA Bill to Require Allergen Labeling in California Restaurants | Kids With Food Allergies

Summary: California Governor Gavin Newsom just signed a major law to help keep people with food allergies safe. It is called the ADDE Act (SB 68). Starting on July 1, 2026, any restaurant chain in California that has 20 or more locations must list the nine most common food allergens right on their menus. These nine foods are milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, wheat, soy, and sesame.

This new rule was inspired by a 9-year-old girl named Addie Lao, who wanted to stop people from accidentally eating foods they are allergic to and ending up in the hospital. Restaurants will be allowed to show this information on paper menus or digitally through a QR code, but they must always have a printed version ready if a customer asks for it. This law will give peace of mind to the 4 million people in California who live with food allergies.
