Affective and Behavioral Responses to Time-Out in Preschool Children With Conduct Problems and Varying Levels of Callous-Unemotional Traits.

Summary: Parents of children with severe behavior issues often worry that discipline strategies like "time-outs" won't work, especially if the child seems to lack empathy or guilt (known as callous-unemotional traits). A recent study observed 87 preschoolers with conduct problems to see how they reacted to parent-led time-outs. Interestingly, the children with high callous-unemotional traits didn't act out more than others; instead, they remained surprisingly calm and neutral, showing "punishment insensitivity." However, the good news is that after three weeks of consistent training, most children—regardless of their emotional traits—learned to listen better and complied with commands, reducing the need for time-outs overall.
