American Academy of Dermatology survey shows Generation Z adults are unfamiliar with sunburn and tanning risks
Summary: A recent survey by the American Academy of Dermatology shows that many Gen Z adults (ages 18 to 25) do not know the dangers of tanning and sunburns. About 71% of them are unaware of sunburn risks, and 30% say that looking great right now is worth looking worse later in life.
Dr. Jennifer Holman, a skin doctor, knows this danger personally. She used indoor tanning beds in college and found out she had melanoma, a deadly skin cancer, in her early 20s. She warns that getting just one blistering sunburn when you are young almost doubles your risk of getting melanoma. To stay safe, doctors recommend seeking shade, wearing clothes that protect you from the sun, and reapplying sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every two hours.
