An Integrative Supraglottic Sound Source Taxonomy (SSST) for Pathological Speaking Voice: A Case Series.

Summary: Have you ever wondered how people speak when their vocal cords are badly damaged? Sometimes, the parts of the throat just above the vocal cords—called supraglottic structures—step in to help make sound. Doctors studied seven patients with severe voice problems to see exactly how this works. They found that these extra throat parts can help out in different ways. Sometimes they just add a little extra sound, sometimes they completely take over, and sometimes they help compensate for permanent damage. By mapping out exactly how these throat parts vibrate, doctors created a new guide. This new system will help voice doctors and therapists better understand, diagnose, and treat people with severe voice problems!
