Anne Kasmar, MD, MSc, on advancing innovation and collaboration in antimicrobial resistance
Summary: Superbugs are getting stronger, and regular antibiotics just aren't enough anymore. At a big medical meeting, Dr. Anne Kasmar explained that we need brand-new tools to fight antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Instead of relying only on traditional antibiotics, scientists are shifting to a "21st-century mindset." They are looking at vaccines, immune system boosters, and special bacteria-eating viruses called bacteriophages. Dr. Kasmar believes that to beat these superbugs quickly, scientists and government regulators must team up globally, just like they did during the COVID-19 pandemic. As the UN recently said, "It’s got to be all of us in it to end it."
