Assessment of auditory conditions in misophonia treatment research: a scoping review.
Summary: Misophonia is a condition where certain everyday sounds cause extreme emotional reactions, like anger or panic. Researchers looked at 15 different studies that used behavioral therapy to treat it. They found good news: therapy helped reduce patients' symptoms by 19% to 83%.
However, they also found a major blind spot. Even though misophonia is related to hearing, most of these studies only focused on mental health and completely ignored checking for other ear problems, like ringing in the ears or extreme sensitivity to sound. Since these issues usually start during childhood, doctors, therapists, and hearing specialists need to work together much earlier to test and treat the whole patient.
