Association between food intake frequency and psychological distress following the Great East Japan Earthquake: the Fukushima Health Management Survey FY 2012.
Summary: After a massive earthquake in Japan, many people had to leave their homes and live in temporary shelters. Researchers wanted to know if what these people ate changed how they felt emotionally. They looked at over 42,000 adults two years after the disaster.
They found something very interesting: people who often ate whole foods like rice, fresh fruits, and light-colored vegetables felt less stressed and had fewer sad or scary memories. On the other hand, people who drank a lot of fruit or vegetable juice actually felt more stressed and upset. This shows that eating healthy, whole meals might help protect our minds and keep us calm after a very scary event.
