Association of psychosocial factors and biological pathways identified from rare-variant analysis with longitudinal trajectories of treatment response in major depressive disorder.

Summary: Treating depression is tricky because everyone reacts differently to medicine. In this study, doctors followed nearly 1,000 patients for eight weeks to see how their depression changed while taking antidepressants. They found three main patterns: some got better quickly, some improved slowly, and some had a rocky, up-and-down path. The people with the rocky path often felt worse overall and had more strict family rules growing up. The researchers also looked at the patients' DNA. They found that certain genes related to brain growth and inflammation might explain why people react so differently. This means doctors might soon be able to use a patient's genes and life history to pick the best treatment for them!
