Billy Porter Says He Was “Dead for Three Days” During His Sepsis Battle

Summary: Billy Porter, the famous award-winning actor from Pose, recently shared a very scary health story. While acting in the play Cabaret in London, he got a urinary tract infection (UTI). He joked that the medicine there was "trash," and his illness soon turned into a severe kidney infection with kidney stones.

When he came back to the U.S. to perform on Broadway, the pain became unbearable. Doctors found a kidney stone trapped in his body. During surgery to remove it, hidden infection and pus flooded his system. This caused urosepsis, a deadly condition where a UTI spreads into the bloodstream.

Billy went into a coma and was on life support. He says he was "dead for three days." While he was in the coma, his leg muscles swelled and lost oxygen—a dangerous condition called compartment syndrome. Doctors had to cut his leg open from his knee to his hip for two days just to save it. Billy had to leave his Broadway show to heal, but he is incredibly thankful to be alive, calling himself a "walking miracle."
