Summary: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) makes it hard to breathe, and scientists are trying to figure out why some people get it while others don't. In a new study, researchers looked at the DNA of over 1,000 people. They discovered that a specific change in a gene called BPIFB4 makes people much more likely to develop COPD.
This genetic risk is highest for smokers, but even non-smokers with this gene change are at a greater risk. The researchers also tested mice and found that when this gene doesn't work right, it triggers a chain reaction in the body that leads to lung damage. This discovery helps us understand COPD better and might lead to new treatments in the future.
