BRCA germline mutations in women with uterine serous carcinoma--still a debate.
Summary: Doctors have long known that BRCA gene mutations increase the risk of breast and ovarian cancers. Now, a new study suggests these "breast cancer genes" might also be linked to a specific, aggressive type of uterine cancer called Uterine Serous Carcinoma (USC). Researchers studied 51 Ashkenazi Jewish women with USC and found that nearly 16% carried a BRCA mutation—a much higher rate than the general population. Additionally, many of these women had a personal or family history of breast or ovarian cancer. While this strongly suggests a genetic link, experts say more research is needed before changing official prevention guidelines.
