Burn Violence Against Women in Australia: The Tip of the Iceberg From Australian Burn Centers.

Summary: Violence against women is a serious and widespread problem. Recently, shocking cases of women being burned on purpose by their partners have made the news in Australia. But how common is this in hospitals?

Researchers looked at hospital records from 2009 to 2022 to find out. Out of over 6,200 women treated for burns, about 2.5% were victims of suspected violence. Compared to accidental burns, these attacks were much more dangerous. The victims were usually younger, and the burns often involved flames and gasoline. Sadly, these attacks were more likely to injure the face and head, and more likely to be deadly. The attackers were mostly romantic partners. Hospitals need better training to spot these victims and help keep women safe.
