Can I still offer telehealth to my Medicare patients?

Summary: As of October 2025, the rules for Medicare telehealth visits have changed drastically due to expired laws and a government shutdown. If you are a doctor seeing patients on traditional Medicare, you might not get paid for video visits anymore—especially if the patient is at home rather than at a medical facility.

Because the "COVID-era" flexibility rules ended on September 30, 2025, Medicare has gone back to old restrictions. Now, coverage is mostly limited to patients in rural areas who travel to a clinic for their video call. If a patient insists on a video visit from home, doctors should have them sign an "ABN" form. This form warns the patient that if the government refuses to pay the bill, the patient will have to pay it themselves.
