<![CDATA[Why isn't hiring keeping up with openings?]]>

Summary: Hospitals are struggling to find enough doctors to treat patients. Since the pandemic, many doctors have retired early or quit because of severe stress and burnout. At the same time, an older population needs more medical care than ever. Even though more students are going to medical school, there aren't enough training spots—called residencies—for them to finish becoming doctors. Hospitals are trying to fix this by offering to pay off student loans and helping doctors balance work and life, but the shortage is still getting worse.
