Characterization of Fungal Pathogens Causing Blueberry Fruit Rot Disease in China.

Summary: Blueberries are booming in China, becoming a favorite snack and a growing industry. However, farmers face a major problem: the fruit rots easily, threatening the harvest. To solve this mystery, scientists acted as crop detectives, collecting rotting berries from orchards in Guizhou and Fujian Provinces. By studying the mold under microscopes and analyzing its DNA, they isolated 16 different fungal samples. The investigation revealed seven specific species of fungus responsible for destroying the fruit, a crucial first step in developing better ways to protect the crop.
