Clinical implications of heavy silicon oil (Densiron®) endotamponade after pars plana vitrectomy: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Summary: Imagine your eye is like a camera, and the retina is the film at the back. Sometimes, the bottom part of this "film" tears and peels away. This is very hard for doctors to fix because standard fluids float to the top of the eye, not the bottom. To help it heal, doctors can fill the eye with a special heavy oil called Densiron. Because it is heavier than water, it sinks to the bottom and presses the torn retina back into place like a heavy blanket.
A big study looked at 22 past reports involving 970 eyes treated this way. They found that the heavy oil worked very well, successfully fixing the tear in about 80 out of 100 people. While a few people had mild issues like eye swelling or oil bubbles, the heavy oil proved to be a very safe and promising treatment for these tricky eye tears.
