CMS, FDA unveil speedier Medicare coverage pathway for breakthrough devices
Summary: The FDA and CMS are teaming up to get life-saving medical devices to Medicare patients much faster. Right now, it can take up to five years for Medicare to cover a new "breakthrough" device after the FDA approves it. A new program called RAPID will cut that wait down to just two months! Led by FDA Commissioner Marty Makary and CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz, the agencies will work with device makers early on. This ensures companies do the right tests from the start, cutting red tape and saving time.
