CMS final rule aims to ax the fax machine, phase out paper mailing
Summary: The government is finally getting rid of fax machines in healthcare! The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) just passed a new rule to stop using paper mail and faxes for medical claims. Instead, doctors, hospitals, and insurance companies will have to use secure electronic systems by May 2028.
CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz joked that the 1980s called and want their fax machines back. Right now, the medical field still sends about 9 billion fax pages every year. Switching to modern digital records will speed up patient care, cut down on lost paperwork, and save the healthcare industry around $782 million a year.
