Development and implementation of the Compassionate 1 Curriculum: an educational initiative to improve the delivery of care to patients receiving involuntary orders for mental health emergencies.

Summary: Going to the emergency room can be a very scary experience, especially for people having a mental health crisis who are being kept in the hospital against their will. To help these patients feel safer, doctors and nurses at a hospital in Toronto started the "Compassionate 1 Project." This new training program teaches hospital staff how to be kinder, communicate better, and make patients more comfortable. The main goal is to keep patients calm and prevent severe, angry outbursts. Next, the hospital will check to see if this special training actually helps reduce these dangerous events.
