Does knowledge of predictors of recovery and nonrecovery assist outcomes after whiplash injury?

Summary: Recovering from a whiplash injury can be unpredictable. Doctors have been studying which early warning signs suggest a patient might struggle with long-term pain or disability. This review found that the strongest predictor of a slow recovery is having high pain levels immediately after the accident. Other warning signs include extreme sensitivity to cold, limited neck movement, and psychological stress—such as expecting the worst or experiencing PTSD-like symptoms. However, while we can predict who might struggle, science hasn't yet proven that targeting these specific risk factors with special treatments actually improves the final outcome. For now, high initial pain is the clearest red flag.
