Does robotic circumferential oversewing reduce anastomotic leakage in stapled anastomosis for rectal cancer surgery?

Summary: When doctors remove rectal cancer, they have to connect the healthy parts of the bowel back together. Sometimes, this connection leaks, which is a serious and dangerous problem. Doctors usually use metal staples to make this connection. In this study, doctors looked at what happens when they also sew stitches around the stapled connection using a surgical robot. They found that adding these extra stitches dropped the chance of a leak from about 10% down to less than 2%. This means sewing over the staples is a great way to keep patients safe and help them heal better without needing a stoma bag.
