Domestic violence screening and intervention programmes for adults with dental or facial injury.

Summary: Domestic violence often results in injuries to the face and mouth. Because of this, dentists and oral surgeons are in a unique position to spot signs of abuse and offer help. Ideally, spotting these signs early could lead to support that keeps victims safe. However, there is a risk: if a doctor gives the wrong advice—like pressuring a victim to leave before they are safe—it could actually make the violence worse.

Researchers conducted a massive review of global medical databases to find scientific proof on whether screening programs in dental offices actually help victims. Surprisingly, they found zero randomized controlled trials on this topic. This means we currently have no solid scientific evidence to say whether these screening programs do more good than harm, or how they should be designed.
