Dual Parental Schizophrenia Increases Risk for Autism and ADHD in Offspring

Summary: A huge study from Taiwan looked at over 1.7 million families to see how parents' severe mental health issues affect their children. Researchers found that if both parents have schizophrenia, their child's risk for autism jumps from 0.3% to 1.6%. The risk for ADHD and other mental health conditions also goes up depending on the mix of parents' diagnoses, like depression or bipolar disorder. For example, a mom with bipolar disorder and a dad with depression greatly increases a child's chance of having ADHD. This shows why it is so important to check on kids early if mental illness runs in the family.
