Early Warning Approach to Identify Positive Cases of SARS-CoV-2 in School Settings in Italy.
Summary: Did you know that schools can be a major starting point for spreading sickness? During the COVID-19 pandemic, researchers in Italy wanted to see if testing students regularly could catch the virus early, even before they felt sick. From 2021 to 2023, they tested teenagers using a simple spit test. They compared schools that did this regular testing to schools that didn't.
At first, the schools without regular testing had many more sick students. But as the pandemic slowed down, the regular testing caught more hidden cases that would have otherwise been missed! Even though fewer students wanted to be tested as time went on, the study proved that checking students regularly is a great way to spot the virus early and keep schools safe.
