Effect of APOE ε4 Gene on Perihematomal Edema in Intracerebral Hemorrhage: A Prospective Study.

Summary: When a person has a bleeding stroke in the brain (called an intracerebral hemorrhage), the brain can swell up around the bleeding. This swelling causes more damage and makes recovery harder. Scientists looked at a specific gene called APOE ε4 to see if it makes this swelling worse. They studied 48 patients who needed surgery for brain bleeding. They found that people with the APOE ε4 gene had much more brain swelling than people without it. The gene seems to change how certain proteins work in the brain, breaking down the brain's protective barrier and letting more fluid leak in. This discovery helps doctors understand why some people get worse brain swelling and could lead to new treatments in the future.
