EHRs / Interoperability Archives - Becker's Hospital Review | Healthcare News & Analysis

Summary: Electronic Health Records (EHRs) are changing how hospitals work, but they are causing some drama, too. The VA is finally improving its new computer system after years of delays. St. Joseph’s Health saved millions of dollars on a blood management program using their Oracle Health system.

Meanwhile, Epic is taking over the hospital market. They now control 43.7% of hospital EHRs. Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center even made a $107 million profit partly because of their new Epic system. But Epic is also facing lawsuits. People are suing them for making it hard to share data, which hurts disabled patients trying to get their medical records for Social Security claims. Epic's CEO, Judy Faulkner, says they need strict rules and noncompetes to protect their company's trade secrets. Also, the government is giving out $10,000 prizes to people who can turn raw health data into helpful tools for doctors and patients.
