Estimation of New Regulators of Iron Metabolism in Short-Term Follow-Up After Bariatric Surgery.
Summary: Weight loss surgery is great for shedding pounds, but how does it affect the iron in your blood? A new study looked at 40 patients who had a "sleeve gastrectomy" (a surgery that makes the stomach smaller). Doctors checked their iron levels before the surgery and five months after. They also looked at special proteins in the body that control iron to understand how this works. They found that iron levels actually went up after five months! This is good news, showing that in the short term, this surgery might help improve iron levels in the blood.
