Ethical and legal implications of health monitoring wearable devices: A scoping review.
Summary: Wearable health trackers, like smartwatches and fitness bands, are becoming popular for monitoring health, but a new scientific review suggests we should proceed with caution. Researchers analyzed 12 key studies and found that while these devices offer exciting technology, they bring serious ethical and legal risks. The main concerns include the potential to damage the trust between doctors and patients, privacy issues regarding who owns your personal health data, and the risk of widening the gap between those who can afford these devices and those who cannot. Furthermore, current laws aren't strong enough to protect users. The study concludes that without better rules and ethical safeguards, these devices might do more harm than good by turning patients into mere data points rather than people.
