Evaluation of MRI for initial staging of esophageal cancer: the STIRMCO study.
Summary: When doctors find cancer in the food pipe (called the esophagus), they need to know exactly how far it has grown to choose the best treatment. Usually, this takes several different tests, including putting a camera tube down the throat and taking radiation scans. In this study, doctors tested 60 patients using an MRI scan combined with a PET scan to see if it worked just as well. The good news? The MRI combination was highly accurate and just as good as the standard tests. Plus, it is much more comfortable for the patient and uses less radiation. This means patients might get a safer, easier test to plan their cancer care in the future!
