Evaluation of the clinical value of CCTA as the preferred screening method in patients with chronic coronary syndrome.

Summary: For patients with chest pain or suspected chronic heart issues, doctors often have to decide between a non-invasive CT scan (CCTA) or a direct, invasive catheter procedure (ICA) to check for blockages. A new study involving 1,200 patients compared these two approaches head-to-head.

The results showed that starting with the CT scan is a smart "gatekeeper" strategy. Using the CT scan first reduced the number of unnecessary invasive procedures by over 86% and lowered hospital costs significantly. Importantly, this cost-saving approach was just as safe as the invasive method, with no increase in heart attacks or other major complications over a one-year follow-up. For most patients, the CT scan is the better first step.
