Evaluation of therapeutic plasma exchange in anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis in real-life settings: long-term results of propensity score matching analysis in high-risk patients.
Summary: Imagine your body's defense system gets confused and attacks your blood vessels, causing damage to important organs like your kidneys. This is a rare disease called AAV. Doctors sometimes use a treatment called "plasma exchange" to clean the blood and remove the bad parts attacking the body. But does it really help? In this study, researchers looked back at patients with severe AAV. They found that plasma exchange did not improve survival or save the kidneys in the long run. In fact, patients who got this treatment had a higher chance of getting serious infections. The takeaway? Cleaning the blood this way might not be worth the extra risks for these patients.
