Evaluation of vitamin D supplementation for children under 16 years of age in France. A cross-sectional observational study.

Summary: Are French Children Getting Their "Sunshine Vitamin"?

Vitamin D is crucial for building strong bones and preventing rickets in growing children. In 2022, France updated its guidelines to ensure kids get enough of this essential nutrient. However, a recent study conducted in emergency departments in Normandy reveals a worrying trend: most children aren't taking their supplements.

Researchers surveyed over 700 children and found that only 17% were following the official recommendations. While babies and toddlers (under 2 years old) had a better track record with 38% adherence, compliance dropped significantly as children got older. The study found that families were more likely to follow the rules if they saw a pediatrician regularly or had a higher socioeconomic status. The findings suggest that more needs to be done to help families stick to these healthy habits as their children grow up.
