Even microscopic extranodal extension has significant recurrent and metastatic potential in oral squamous cell carcinoma.
Summary: When mouth cancer spreads to the lymph nodes, doctors check to see if the cancer has broken out of the node. This breakout is called "extranodal extension." If the breakout is large, we already know the cancer is more likely to come back. But what if the breakout is so tiny it can only be seen under a microscope?
This study looked at 170 patients and found that even a tiny, microscopic breakout means the cancer still has a high chance of returning or spreading to other parts of the body. Finding these tiny breakouts is very important so doctors can plan the best possible treatment to keep the cancer away.
