Expert panel on monitoring radiation doses from recurrent medical diagnostic procedures: Sixth Gilbert W. Beebe Webinar.

Summary: Medical scans like CTs and X-rays are vital tools for doctors to track diseases and guide treatments. However, when patients require these scans repeatedly—known as "recurrent imaging"—the amount of radiation they are exposed to adds up over time. Recently, a group of experts gathered to discuss the safety and ethics of this cumulative exposure. While everyone agrees that the scans are necessary for care, there is currently no clear standard on who is responsible for tracking a patient's total radiation history. The expert panel concluded that doctors, imaging specialists, and regulators need to work together to create a unified system. This "harmonization" would ensure that patients get the tests they need while keeping long-term radiation risks in check.
