Exploring the Effectiveness and Acceptability of a Self-Help Acceptance-Based Behavior Intervention for Anxiety in Black Adults: An Uncontrolled Pilot Study.
Summary: Anxiety affects roughly one in five Black Americans, yet many face barriers to accessing professional mental health care. Could a simple book help bridge this gap? Researchers tested "Worry Less, Live More," a self-help workbook based on acceptance and mindfulness techniques, with a group of 65 Black adults. Participants read the book over 16 weeks at their own pace, without a therapist's guidance. The results were encouraging: the majority felt the workbook aligned well with their culture and helped them manage stress related to racism. Those who completed the program reported significantly lower anxiety and a greater ability to accept their emotions, suggesting that self-help resources can be a valuable tool for this community.
