Extended-Release and Sublingual Buprenorphine Are Effective Managing OUD in Emergency Department Settings
Summary: Emergency rooms are finding better ways to help people fighting opioid addiction right when they need it most. A recent study looked at two ways to give buprenorphine, a medicine that eases tough withdrawal symptoms and cravings. Doctors compared giving patients a 7-day long-lasting shot versus giving them daily pills that dissolve under the tongue.
The results were incredibly positive for both! About the same number of people stayed in their treatment programs after 7 and 30 days, no matter which option they used. However, the 7-day shot gave patients a slight edge: they felt fewer cravings, used fewer illegal opioids, and were more satisfied with their care. Having a shot that lasts a whole week means patients don't have to stress about remembering a daily pill, making the road to recovery just a little bit smoother.
