Scientists have discovered that a naturally occurring protein called "extracellular ubiquitin" (eUb) might act as a shield for these nerves. In experiments using both lab-grown cells and rats, administering eUb early after an injury helped trigger a cellular "cleanup" process while stopping the signals that tell cells to die.
