First report of treatment and short-term follow-up of a European mink (Mustela lutreola) with leishmaniosis in Spain.
Summary: The European mink is one of the most endangered mammals in the world. Recently, a captive mink in Spain got very sick with a parasite disease called leishmaniosis. The poor animal lost weight, had swollen eyes, and showed bad blood test results. At first, doctors tried giving it an oral medicine, but it didn't work well because the mink wouldn't swallow it properly. When the vets switched to a different medicine given by injection, the mink got much better! This is the very first time this disease has been found and treated in a European mink. It shows how important it is to test and treat these rare animals quickly to help save their species.
