Genetic and Social Determinants of Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System Inhibitor-Induced Angioedema: A Precision Medicine Health Equity Study.

Summary: Some blood pressure medicines (called RAAS inhibitors) can cause a severe allergic reaction where the deep layers of the skin swell up. This dangerous swelling happens up to five times more often in Black patients than in White patients. For a long time, doctors didn't know exactly why and just blamed it on race. However, race is not a good way to measure biology. This study looks past just skin color to find the real reasons. By studying both DNA (genes) and life stress (social factors), researchers hope to understand this gap and keep all patients safe.
