Genotype-Phenotype Correlation in Lipoid Proteinosis: 15 Cases from Turkiye.
Summary: Imagine a rare genetic condition that causes thick skin and mouth sores. It's called Lipoid Proteinosis (LP). Doctors in Turkey recently studied 15 people from 10 different families who have this condition. They found that while everyone had the typical skin issues, some patients also suffered from seizures, mental health struggles, or diabetes.
The doctors looked closely at the patients' DNA to see if specific gene changes caused specific symptoms. Surprisingly, they found that even family members with the exact same gene mutation had very different symptoms! Because the disease is so unpredictable, it is really hard for doctors to tell families exactly what to expect in the future.
