Global Disease Burden, Trends, and Inequalities of Brain and Central Nervous System Cancers, 1990-2021: A Population-Based Study with Projections to 2036.
Summary: Brain and spinal cord cancers are a growing problem worldwide. Over the last 30 years, the number of new cases has more than doubled. In wealthy countries, the aging population is the main reason for this increase. In poorer countries, population growth is the main cause. While better medical care has helped lower death rates in rich areas, the burden is still very heavy in poorer regions, and the gap between rich and poor countries is expected to get worse. However, new advances in brain science give us hope that overall rates will drop in the next 15 years. We urgently need to improve healthcare access and treatment in underserved areas.
