Groin Pain: Causes and How to Get Rid of It

Summary: Groin pain can happen for many different reasons. Most of the time, it is caused by a pulled muscle from playing sports, a hernia (when tissue pushes through a weak spot in your muscles), or hip problems like arthritis. You might notice that the pain gets worse when you sit down for a long time, like when driving, because sitting bends your hip.

For mild pain, you can usually treat it at home using the RICE method: Rest, Ice, Compression (wrapping it), and Elevation. However, you should see a doctor right away if the pain is very bad, doesn't go away, or if you have a fever, a painful bulge, or trouble walking. In rare cases, severe groin pain can be a sign of a medical emergency, like a twisted testicle (testicular torsion) or appendicitis, which requires quick surgery.
