Having a Primary Care Physician Reduces ED Use for Patients on Dialysis

Summary: If you are on dialysis for kidney disease, having a regular primary care doctor can save you a stressful trip to the emergency room. A new study looked at over 180,000 Medicare patients and found that those with a primary care doctor went to the ER a lot less often (about 51% of the time) compared to those without one (about 72% of the time). While it didn't change how often people had to stay overnight in the hospital, having a regular doctor kept many patients out of the busy ER waiting room.
