Here's Alysa Liu's Secret to Taking Care of Her Smiley Piercing

Even though getting it didn't hurt at all (she gave it a 0 out of 10 for pain!), it requires serious upkeep. Smiley piercings, also known as frenulum piercings, can get infected, be rejected by the body, or cause your gums to pull back.

To protect her smile, Alysa takes pictures of her gums every couple of weeks to make sure her teeth are safe. She got the piercing in December 2022, so her phone has a massive folder full of gum photos! Her best advice? If your gums start to shrink, take the piercing out right away because, as she says, you definitely want to keep your teeth.
