High Chronicity of HEV in Transplant Recipients But Strong Response to Tailored Ribavirin

Summary: People who get organ transplants have a higher chance of catching the Hepatitis E Virus (HEV), especially those who receive a new liver. A large study looking at 20 years of data found that about 3.5% of transplant patients got HEV. For many of these patients, the infection sticks around and becomes chronic. The good news is that doctors found a medicine called ribavirin works really well, especially when the treatment time is customized for each person. Sometimes, just lowering a patient's anti-rejection medicine helps their body clear the virus on its own. Because of this, doctors say it is incredibly important to test transplant patients for HEV if their liver tests look high.
