How AI scribes can rescue clinical education from burnout

Summary: Doctors and nurses are spending too much time staring at computers instead of looking at their patients. This is a big problem, especially for medical students who are learning how to do the job. When students see their teachers (called preceptors) clicking and typing all day, they think that is how medicine should be. Writing patient notes has become a huge chore used for billing and rules, leaving doctors with no energy to actually teach.

AI scribes could help fix this. They listen to the visit and write the notes automatically. While they aren't perfect and still need to be checked by a human, they take away the heavy typing burden. This gives teachers more time to look patients in the eye, explain their thinking out loud, and actually teach students. Lynn McComas, a nursing leader and expert in medical teaching, believes AI can bring human connection back to medicine.
